This rainy spring Sunday called two books to me today. One, I had wrongly abandoned some time ago, Virginia Woolf’s “The Waves”, and another I return to frequently, Diana Vreeland’s “Memos”.
“The Waves” jumped to my on the shelf perhaps because I know how potent Woolf’s imagery is and it mirrors what’s happening with the season and weather right now. There is a stillness and awakening all at once in Spring and somehow she can capture this in writing. And perhaps I was looking to pull elements out of that myself… and an even deeper truth, I’m replacing time spent on social media with different investments.“Memos” is exactly that. A collection of iconic memos to iconic creators from Vreeland’s time at Vogue. It’s a valuable asset for anyone’s collection— touching upon color, mood, fashion, photography, design— it’s infinite in its inspiration. And what a treasure to be able to see the spark of the maestro before the creative work finds its way into final form. And if you’re looking for even more, this documentary on her is worth catching.
